National Electric Code (NEC) – a document (book) published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) that is used by most States with very little changes (usually a couple of pages of amendments for specific state) as their electric code. The the document specifying how in practice the professionals should identify different electric systems and component – hence the important reason to mention such book in a glossary like this.
The National Electric Code in it’s newest editions (the latest one is 2008) has specific section for photovoltaics. Chapter 6 is Special Equipment and Article 690 is Solar Photovoltaic Systems.
The section talks in length about the identification of the different components in a solar photovoltaic system, different requirements to the design of the electric circuits.
A different section mentions the requirement for all components to be listed by a recognized testing laboratory. SolarByTheWatt.com has a good article about that and how UL is not the only company that does safety testing laboratory listing.
